Myofascial release is an example of this; it is the process by which an affected area is manipulated to release stress points and strain. However, there are other ways to manipulate affected areas, including old-fashioned massage therapy. These things work best if the chronic pain is caused by muscles and nerves being too tight and unable to relax.
Pain Management
Pain management is all about learning how to deal with your pain mentally. It can involve general relaxation techniques, pain blocking, or biofeedback which is the process by which you alter your own neurotransmitter system to lower pain. Pain management requires a great deal of mental fortitude and willpower, so it's not something to try right away.
Hot/Cold Packs
Hot or cold packs, also known as cutaneous stimulation, are simply the process of heating or cooling an afflicted area using heated or cooled packs. The idea is to relax the muscles and nerves and so decreases the pain. Hot and cold packs only work very well in conjunction with other pain management techniques; they are not very effective alone.
TENs
TENs, or electrotherapy, is the use of low dosage electricity to stimulate the nerve endings and deaden pain. TENs can be every effective for some kinds of pain, but like all pain management techniques, you should talk to your doctor first.
The best thing to do for non-invasive pain treatment is a combination of things. For example, you may want to do muscle manipulation, exercising and hot or cold packs in order to manage your pain with a bit of mental work to tie you over the difficult times. There are ways to manage your pain without surgery or expensive medications, but they take dedication and willpower to succeed in. However, when you are able to do it, it's well worth the effort. So, if you are leery about surgery and cannot afford to take drugs, try some non-invasive ways of managing your pain and see how well they can work for you.
