Dealing With The Stress Of Moving Home
Picking up your life and moving it to another place is bound to bring about stress
. The key to a smooth move with minimal stress is planning. If possible, start a month or two ahead of time and make goals for the four weeks leading up to the big day. Start initial inquiries to find out how much notification is needed for transfers. For instance, postal redirection can take up to 10 days and often requires a fee. Take note of the future costs during the research and plan accordingly. Schedule days of rest. These appointments to have fun and take care of yourself will keep life from revolving around the move and decrease overall stress.
Take inventory of possessions. Start gathering boxes and packing items that won't be needed for six months. Pack room by room and label the boxes as such for easier unpacking. Avoid the temptation to use big boxes. Smaller boxes will help prevent back injury when stacking boxes. Hold frequent gatherings where friends can enjoy a meal with you and then participate in boxing away items while listening to music and reminiscing. Keeping the process as fun as possible while engaging friends and family will help decrease the stress of moving.
Budget monies to get the physical help needed for the removal process. If friends or family aren't near the new home, be prepared to hire help.
Keep a notepad and pen specifically for the moving process. Choose a folder to keep all documents related to the move. Make a list of those that need to be notified of the new address. The chaos of a move makes it easy to forget to notify the car insurance, doctors, vehicle registration, or financial providers, but having a specific place to gather such thoughts makes it less likely.
If children are involved in the move, it is imperative that meal times and schedules are as close as possible to normal. Set special dates and outings each week as the move gets closer to discuss feelings and possibilities in regards to the move. Involve them in the process. It's tempting to keep the children busy and do the work yourself but allowing a child to feel needed will help ease their stress. Give them specific tasks to complete such as packing the plush animals or searching all the cabinets and under the beds for items that may have been missed. On the actual moving day, consider asking a friend to take them out on a fun outing. The moving of boxes and cleaning up the mess left behind will be less stressful if the children are occupied.
Research the new location. Take the time to make a list of possible places to eat, shop, and play near the new home. Before moving, decide where your first meal will be after arrival. This will take away some of the anxiety on moving day. Before the removal process, set a goal for a fun outing once things are unpacked at the new location.
