Dealing with Exasperation in the Work Place

Dealing with Exasperation in the Work Place

The moment you become exasperated, it only points out to one obvious fact: you are already stressed out.

There are many aspects that could really tug at people's patience and step on their nerves. Work-related matters, in particular, are among the top common causes of exasperation. From gruelling work demands to irksome colleagues and obnoxious bosses, almost everything and anything about the grind is liable to push anyone's buttons at any given time regardless of the variation in the surrounding or triggering circumstances.

But no matter how exasperating things get in the work place, doing your best to keep your cool is the only way to survive pressure without incurring any damages either to yourself, your work, or anyone else involved. Even if medical advice would tell you to take vitamin supplements to help you weather the effects of stress, specific events could turn out to be too demanding that you may find yourself overwhelmed. But all is not lost.

To help you manage your temper, hence keep yourself sane, try these effective suggestions.

Try practising emotional detachment right from the start.

Prior to getting started with your work, program yourself to become emotionally detached. Exasperation is primarily brought about by emotional stress. The more susceptible you are to emotional stress at work, the more emotionally attached you are to it. So the trick is to try not to be too emotional about it.

However, being human, distancing yourself emotionally from anything you are involved with is a task so Herculean it is nearly improbable. Trying too hard to eradicate all your emotions only to fall short of your expectations could only up your stress all the more. So, how could you strike a balance? Try to be emotionally detached, but don't expect 100% success.

Even if you do not succeed in blotting out your emotions entirely as you workwhich is indeed quite a hefty challenge since you devote a great deal of your time, effort, and focus on itreducing your emotional attachment, even just a little, works to decrease your risk of exasperation. The reduction suffices to give you enough energy to practice de-stressing methods, especially when you are caught in the thick of things.

Take a breather.

When things begin to heat up in the office, turn away from everything by taking an emergency break. Grab yourself a cup of coffee, take a trip to the water dispenser, chat a while with a trusted office confidante, or just get some fresh air for a few minutes. It doesn't matter what you do to help yourself unwind, so long as it gets your mind off the stressor. Forcing yourself to endure as your patience continuously thins out could result to your losing control in the end. So if you must excuse yourself a moment to get some time-out, do not think twice and just get on with it.

Laugh it up.

Getting exasperated easily means you are too serious with what you are doing. Not that you have to change the way you value your work, it's just that you must learn to cut yourself some slack every once in a while. If you don't, you run the risk of not only getting exasperated but also having a weakened physical system, as mental stress is known to adversely impact the body. One effective way to help you counter the effects of stress is to use humor. Humoring the situation even in a satirical way dispels the tension, hence alleviating your mental stress. Or you can take a comic break by reading funny anecdotes or looking at funny cartoons or pictures.
