Dealing with File Associations

Author: Celeste Stewart, Filetonic Tech Jock

What are File Associations? A computer knows how to work with thousands of different file types because it contains an index that tells it which programs are associated with which types of files. More than one program can be associated with any given file format. For example, PhotoShop and Microsoft Paint are both capable of opening .jpeg files. However, only one can be the default program. In fact, depending on which version of Windows you are running, one of the ways that you can manage your computers file associations is through a utility named Default Programs. Why Do File Associations Break? Computers are dynamic machines, constantly changing. You add new software, apply operating system and program updates, add new devices, update device drivers, and interact with others online. Each of these activities alters the computers configuration. Its not uncommon to install a new application and accept its default settings. The only trouble is, some setup programs are programmed to change your computers settings so that the new application becomes the new default program for certain file types. For example, if you install a new photo editing program, it may suddenly become the new default program for any type of graphic. This may be fine if you like the program and want to use it extensively. On the other hand, it may be annoying if you prefer to use a different program most of the time. Other common causes of broken file associations include power surges and unexpected system shutdowns and malware. In addition, your computer may not be equipped with the right software for opening certain types of files in which case youll need to either convert the file into a format your computer can handle of find software capable of working with it. Setting the Default Program Changing the default program is relatively straightforward. You can either right-click on a file sporting the extension that you want to associate and follow a few simple prompts to change the default program or you can launch the Default Programs utility directly. When working with an individual file, right-click it and choose Open With from the list that appears. Browse for the correct program, select it, and then mark the box designated to making the selected program the new default for this file type. Confirm your choice by clicking OK and the association will now be established. The second technique is to launch Default Programs directly. This utility is found in the Control Panel in Windows 7. Once launched, click the link labeled Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program. Find the extension that you want to associate in the list and highlight it. Youll see a brief description as well as the current default program. If you want to change the default, click the Change Program button and then browse for the desired program. Once selected, make sure to mark the Always use the selected program option to make it the new default program and confirm your choice by clicking OK.About the Author:
