Debt Relief Time? Up To Your Nose In Debt? Here Are Some Creative Ways To Stop Spending

Sometimes, well, oftentimes really, we spend because we are bored or because we aren't feeling the best about ourselves

. And of course with credit cards, money is very easy to spend these days. Here are some ideas that will help you get out of the spending habit.

Cut up your credit cards now, no, don't just cut them up, slice them in different puzzle-like designs angrily, and take photos of them all cut up afterward to remind you of what a mess they got you into.

As another reminder, write in a diary or journal about how you're feeling now, your finances tighter than ever before, phone calls galore form angry and rude debt collectors, embarrassment about the stack of unopened mail on your coffee table that you have to hide whenever guests come over.

If you don't want to destroy them yet (please consider it, really, but if you're truly not ready), you can freeze your credit cards. No, seriously. Place each one into a small ziplock baggy filled with water and then into a large ziplock baggy filled with water, put them into the freezer, and leave them there. Why? Since credit card debt usually accumulates as a result of impulse purchases, having to wait for your credit card to thaw may give you the extra time you need to think through the purchase. And no, dinner out with your girlfriend is not a reason to thaw your credit cards.

Get a hobby. Start reading again, gardening, playing scrabble or completing crossword puzzles. Anything to keep you from researching the next greatest gadget online or scooting on over to the mall.

Spend time with your friends and family. In fact, while you're hanging with them, let them know you're trying to cut back on your spending, and ask them to remind you to think about whether you need it or you just want it.

Hold a credit card dart night with your buddies. Seeing a card with a bunch of dart holes in it serves as yet another reminder of how they once had you hostage.

Go for a walk, hike or jog, take the dog to the dog park, or do some stretching exercises in your living room. Anything that will get the blood pumping will help.

Write some articles or a novel about your experiences with debt (or anything else for that matter). Talk about constant reminders...

If all else fails, get a professional involved. For more information, go to www.settlementdebtservices.org/debtrelief
