Debunking Six Widely-held Myths About Chiropractic Care
Surprisingly, millions of people remain misinformed regarding chiropractic care
. There are numerous fallacies that have taken root over the years, and remain widely-believed today. Our goal in this article is to clarify some of the most common misconceptions, and dispel several persistent myths.
1 - "Chiropractic Care Is Designed For Treating Back Pain"
In reality, chiropractors seek to treat dozens of ailments, many of which may initially appear unrelated to the spinal cord and vertebral column. Examples include foot pain, headaches, shin splints, and even carpal tunnel syndrome. Many athletes rely upon ongoing chiropractic therapy to treat conditions, such as swimmer's shoulder, tennis elbow, and other sports injuries.
A lot of people are surprised to discover that treatment is available for these, and other, disorders. Also noteworthy, because care is focused on an ailment's trigger - rather than its symptoms - relief is typically longer lasting.
2 - "Chiropractic Care Poses Serious Risks"
This fallacy seems to be the result of an overly-enthusiastic media. There are no studies that conclusively show treatment leads to negative outcomes. Instead, there are rare incidents that have somehow become examples of unsafe methods. Given the number of spinal adjustments and joint manipulations performed each year, and the near-nonexistent incident rate of side effects, the persistence of this myth is odd.
Most medical treatments for back pain, joint inflammation, and related injuries are far riskier, and pose much more severe side effects.
3 - "Chiropractic Care Requires Frequent, Perpetual Adjustments"
In some cases, yes. In other cases, definitely not. The basis of a chiropractor's approach is to realign vertebrae that have moved out of their natural positions. This can occur due to several factors. For example, if you are involved in an auto accident, there is a good chance your spine will move slightly out of alignment. This is also the case if you fall, sit with poor posture for extended periods, or cope with stress that manifests in the way you hold your shoulders.
Your chiropractor can realign your vertebrae, but many factors can cause them to become misaligned again. When this happens, a realignment is necessary. Contrast this approach with prescription medications and invasive surgery. While these forms of treatment may initially seem effective, they often do more harm than good.
4 - "The Chiropractor Might Paralyze Me"
This is akin to claiming a surgeon might amputate the wrong limb, or remove the wrong lung. Can it happen? Perhaps. But the incident would be considered bizarre and outside the scope of normal chiropractic care.
5 - "Chiropractic Care Is Cost-Prohibitive"
The treatment offered by a trained chiropractor is cost-effective for most people. This is especially true when compared to the exorbitant costs associated with conventional medical care. Moreover, hundreds of insurance companies already offer coverage for various treatments. When insurance is unavailable, most chiropractors are willing to extend flexible payment plans to ensure you receive the treatment you need.
6 - "Kids Should Not Receive Chiropractic Care"
Many people - parents and non-parents alike - believe spinal adjustments are inappropriate for children. Kids place much more stress on their bodies than adults. Thus, there is a greater likelihood their vertebrae will become misaligned during the course of horseplay, falling down, and general rough-housing. For this reason, children are ideal candidates for an examination to check whether their spine is aligned, or if an adjustment is warranted. It is not uncommon for kids to cope with back and joint pain that dissipates quickly after receiving treatment.
There are, of course, many other common fallacies surrounding chiropractic care. Some claim chiropractors lack specialized education and training (false). Others claim a lack of efficacy of the treatments (also false). These myths, and others, are easily debunked. If you're considering chiropractic care, do your due diligence. Take the time to seek clarification of any concerns you have about the methods used. Most chiropractors are happy to answer your questions.
