Deciding what you need in a first aid kit is individual to you and your family

. Other things to consider are where you will need it, where it will be stored, and any special items you may need to include, like prescription medicines. In reality more than one kit is usually necessary.

Your home should be the first place to have a kit for most home injuries can be taken care of quite easily. When children are involved you know that most accidents occur in the home and in the kitchen. A good burn kit should be included, as well as instructions for what to do when someone is choking, has ingested poison, or has an eye injury.

A small kit should be kept in your glove compartment, purse or briefcase. This is something that you can assemble yourself. Band-aids, cleansing wipes and antibacterial creams is usually enough for everyday scrapes and bumps but these can be purchased as a kit with those extras you don't normally think of.

For backpacking trips or camping trips purchase a comprehensive kit for that purpose. It will range in price and size and how it is housed. Choose one based on what area you will be going into and how far away you will be from emergency help. There are waterproof kits if water will be part of your trip or to protect it from the rain. Select those extras for snakebites or bee stings if necessary.

Each family has its own special needs. Perhaps someone in you family has a minor heart condition be sure to include necessary prescriptions or even an AED (automated external defibrillator). Your kit may never be needed to save a life but it can keep a person hanging on until help arrives. Remember all members and their individual conditions.

All kits should have some instructions on what to do in case of emergency. The more expensive kits even include audio instructions to walk you through what to do. This may be a better option when panic is starting. Prepare yourself by reading the instructions and possibly taking a basic class to walk you through different kinds of emergencies.

When you decide on which first aid kit you want, be sure to replace supplies once they are used. Check the expiration dates on them and maybe keep a log of what needs to be replaced, and when. These kits are designed so you will have at your fingertips what you need to help those you care for. Be prepared.
