The decimal numeral system (also called base ten or occasionally denary) has ten as its base. It is the numerical base most widely used by modern civilizations.
Decimal notation is the writing of numbers in a base-10 numeral system. Roman numerals have symbols for the decimal powers (1, 10, 100, 1000) and secondary symbols for half these values (5, 50, 500). Positional decimal systems include a zero and use symbols (called digits) for the ten values (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) to represent any number, no matter how large or how small.

The decimal point, or "point", orients the reader to the values of the decimal number. Each space to the left of the decimal point increases by a power of 10. Therefore, the first space to the left of the decimal is "ones": the next space to the left is "tens"; the next is "hundreds"; and so fourth.
Each space to the right of the decimal point decreases by a power of 10 starting with "tenths". The second space to the right of the decimal point is the "hundredths"; the next is "thousandths" and so forth. Note that there are no "ones" to the right of the decimal point and the first place to the right starts with "tenths"
