Decision Making Activity Choosing to study at Central Queensland University'
Problem Identification
Initially, having attained the requirements for university entry, I took much time staying in urban setting where most graduates tend to go for employment opportunities. In the process of my stay I could make friends with some graduates from the local universities; some still in progress while some already finished. It was this duration that I noticed what happens to the local graduates both in academic and non academic environment. Most of the graduates, in progress, complained much on less attention by the local lecturers, incompetence in some lecturers, poor library services in availability and accessibility of academic materials, poor research facilities, narrow carrier scope, cumbersome payment methods and poor standards of social welfare.
On the other side, the already graduated friends in the job market complained much on lack of cohesion between the courses offered at the local universities and what the current job market needs. Their further complains were lack of practical experience on their carriers as needed in the job market. This, they said, is largely contributed by the approach the local universities use which is dominated by much theory and class work than practical exposure in the industry.
Approach to the problem against personal goals
Having realized these complains, I decided to take a step in further investigations by visiting these institutions and job places to roughly witness their predicaments. Surely enough, what I was told had no difference with the situation out there. It was from that period that I started anticipating on achieving an international degree studies. This decision I took since I did not want to face all the hassles my friends had been facing right from their college life up to the job market.
Personally I valued pursuing what my passion and talents drive me to rather than being forced to study a career because it is the only fair option for me. I also valued proper recognition in the job market as a well experienced employee. Finally, I valued achieving my goals in a socially free and friendly academic environment.
Solution formulation Criteria; Facts gathering
Therefore I started looking for the best solution for my education problem in accordance with my values and goals while starting with my immediate environment (Simon et al. 2008). I went back to my friends for advice on which international university I could prepare to join. Suggestions were revolving around Australian universities since their graduates seemed to be ranked high on their performance in the local industries and organizations. I further went to one of my former teachers who happened to have graduate from Australia. This teacher also recommended Australian universities, especially the Central Queensland University; he used to hear its good standards during his studies in Australia. From this point, it was time for me to personally research on Australian universities so that I could gather more details. I decided to join the internet for web searches. My first time I goggled the list of these universities in Australia, I came across a number of them including Australian Catholic University, Australian National University, Bond University, Central Queensland University and Charles Darwin University.
Analysis considerations
Since I wanted to save on time in my decision making process, so that I could utilize the remaining time for other preparations, I decided to narrow down the list to only the first five web found universities among which was Central Queensland University. I thought this could also give me easy task when it comes to final decision as I did not want complexities in the process of reaching the last choice. My priorities, in my facts gathering, were based on academic factors such as library services, research facilities, careers and campuses, financial requirements, Cultural and social matters. However this report would only highlight on Central Queensland as my university of choice.
Real Facts analysis
I started with a general approach of eliminating other universities which were lacking my fundamental career goals which was entrepreneurial competence. This criterion made me eliminate the first three universities which were not presenting details on this course comprehensively. Given that I remained with two universities from which I was to settle on one, I began on a deeper analysis and evaluation in comparison approach on the various attributes(Personal Decision making n. d.'). Among my list of factors to consider were still the same as from the beginning when they were still five universities. I made a list of these factors from the most valuable to the least valuable so that I would get easy time when I started my comparisons on their sub-attributes (Simon et al. 2008). My approach was like searching also for their similarities so that I could not be frigid to whichever final option I might be left with. To quantitatively decide best, I decided to assign one point to university which would present better quality according to my reasoning of what I wanted in that factor. Similarly, I assigned a zero to a university which could not meet my personal requirements in the same factor under evaluation. I started with the carrier content and duration. Here they were offering the same level of quality and duration thus neither of them could be awarded a point. In library services, I found CQU University scoring a mark since it had additional database of journals and newspaper together with electronic forms of the same. Financially, they were the same and neither of them could score. In research facilities and related awards, these universities presented the same level of standards towards economic growth (Simon et al. 2008). However when I compared their social and cultural factors issues, I once again found CQU University to suit my interest as an international student. This was due great number of international students it has. This could not only show its international popularity and high standard in academics but it would also make me feel free and comfortable while taking my degree studies; which was my main goal in life. Thus CQU University scored a point.
Decision Criterion and action point
The last step of taking a decision was reached. I began to sum up what CQU University scored against the other alternative university. In conclusion, CQU scored two points higher than the other university. Therefore basing all reasoning on results obtained right from the first step to my last step (Leet et al. n. d.'), I decided to settle on CQU University for my degree studies. I began to process admission letter, followed with financial clearance and pre-visits before I could fly to Australia for my degree studies.
