Deck Designs - Planning Is Critical

Whether you're building your patio by yourself or you're having it built by an experienced

contractor, one thing remains the same: planning is critical if you want to have a finished product you can be proud of. There are endless arrays of deck designs you can choose from and you can even develop something entirely unique if you have the creativity and carpentry knowledge to make it happen. But if you start in one direction only to change your plans halfway through, you're going to create a haphazard mess that will cost you extra money and leave a finished product that isn't up to par. Here are some of the things to consider when drawing up your plans.

Location

If this isn't something you've carefully considered, it is time to start thinking about it. Where is your patio going to go? While everyone has the right to create a patio to their own size specifications, most homeowners prefer one that is approximately 15% of the square footage of their home. Therefore, you need to plan your deck designs with the same thought and consideration you would give to an additional room. Try to keep the actual structure away from your windows, so as not to obstruct your own view.

Function

As much as you might be attracted to deck designs that are as beautiful as they are impractical, don't forget that you'll probably want to actually use your patio. Therefore, you must keep function at the forefront of your plans. If you intend to use the area for outdoor meals, for instance, you might consider positioning it so that you can easily access the kitchen door. If you plan to spend a lot of time out there at night, you might want to think about adding a screen to keep out the mosquitoes. These are the kinds of practical considerations many homeowners don't think about until it's too late.

The Layout

After you've determined the basic size and height of your patio and you have taken any and all functional concerns into account, it's time to start thinking about a specific layout. What kinds of deck designs appeal to you? If you have no idea, you might benefit from looking through some architectural magazines or even driving around town to look at some examples. You certainly don't have to copy a neighbor's construction piece by piece, but a little inspiration can go a long way. Take your budget into account as well and make sure you get the best construction you can for the money.
