WALLPAPER just got chicer with Barneby Gates' Chanel-inspired star print designs. Former Vogue living editor Vanessa Barneby and artist Alice Gates fused their creative skills to make the ultimate in chic interiors.

"It took a long time to translate the stars from clothes to a flat surface," Gates tells us. "It's actually quite a flat pattern but the fabric gives it movement. I think we managed to create a similar effect eventually though."

The design duo are now into their third wallpaper collection and launched to the design world in September at the Decorex Design exhibition. Each of their prints follow, Gates describes, "a quintessentially British" theme, yet fused with a tongue in cheek humour.

"We're inspired by English heraldry but in each of our designs you really do have to look twice. There's always a twist and a bit of hidden humour," she says. "In one of a papers there's a dog peeing on a lamppost but you'd never know it was there until you looked really closely - it's very subtle."

The papers are sure to appeal to a broad demographic; they're a mix of the traditional with the bold and contemporary.

"We've had such a broad customer interest - the more daring styles have been picked up by residential homes for feature walls and the more subdued have been used in a more commercial setting," says Gates.

Does she have any interiors tips?

"I think it's good to think of wallpaper not just as something to go on walls," she says. "The stars design looks great on ceilings for example. Using different colours on different walls can look really effective too.
