Decluttering Your Bedroom
Decluttering a bedroom is not difficult, and if carefully planned
, it should not cause undue stress. Remember to POST, which stands for plan, organize, store, and toss.
Make a Plan
Planning is the first and crucial step in the decluttering process. Whether to complete decluttering in one long session or over several short sessions, depends on a person's schedule. Make sure the plan includes a basic sketch of the storage areas. Next, purchase the storage products and organizers. Some storage options already have space specific for shoes, accessories, jewellery, and bedding. The last step is to mark three large empty boxes as 'keep', 'donate' or 'sell', and 'toss'.
Be Organized
Before organizing and storing, thoroughly clean the bedroom. Cleaning is never fun but a necessity for successful decluttering. Furniture such as dressers or wardrobes can double as an alternative linen closet for storing towels and sheets.
Storage Organizers
The workhorses of the decluttering process are storage products and organizers. Jewellery, handbags, shoes, and ties are some of the items with specific storage organizers available. In addition to these, other organizing solutions are for dresser drawers and closet interiors. Make a list of the bedroom's storage needs by room and use.
Toss Old Items
The last step in the process is sealing the boxes marked 'toss' and throwing them in the trash. Now, relax and enjoy a clutter-free bedroom.
With a weekly schedule, a bedroom remains clutter free with regular cleaning and organizing. The schedule should include weekly cleaning and laundry. It is a good idea to clean as you go instead of all at once. Place dirty clothing in the hamper daily and do not allow clothes to build up on the floor or at the bottom of the closet. Part of organization is replacing all the items in the original container for storage. For example, put shoes back in their storage area after taking them off and immediately hang up and fold clothes.
A sure way to avoid clutter in the future is to make a hard and fast rule of throwing out an old item when purchasing a new one. Throw out one pair of shoes for every new pair purchased. Example, if a closet contains 30 pairs of shoes, then, for every pair purchased an old pair are given or thrown away. It is a healthy rule to adopt and applies to clothing and other items.
