Computers are not sentient. It means you have to instruct them what to do. If you do not tell a computer its task, the machine will sit idle. It is possible to give instructions to a computer in either of the following two ways: you can write a program that instructs a computer as to its future activity, procedure by procedure. This is similar to a cooking recipe. Alternatively, you can purchase a program that someone has already written. The purchased program will instruct your computer to do the planned future activities. In a nutshell, programming a computer is essential.

Any program- be it Java, Visual Basic or any other instructs the computer to accept some form of input, operate that input and then displays it in a form that is understood by humans. The following describes a variety of programs, the variations of input being accepted and the consequent output.

We will now discuss the input and output for various programs. A word processor is a type of program that format the text made up from the computer keyboard. The output is a neatly organized displays and prints.

The Game program has its inputs from the movement of its keystrokes and joystick movements. The program calculates the speed with which to move a cartoon figure on screen. The output is movement of a cartoon on screen. The stock market program created by software developers has current and past stock prices as input. The program tries to recognize trends in the fluctuations of a stock price. The output is the prediction of the future price of the stock. The program for the missile guidance system has the current location of the missile and the target as its input. The output generated is the trajectory aiming at the target. The program calculates the location of the missile vis--vis the location of the target.

Software developers writing programming code for Optical Character Recognition or OCR takes text from a scanner as input. The software then recognizes the character shapes and output takes the form of a scanned text into a text file that a word processor is able to edit. The web browser software takes HyperText Markup Language or HTML codes on other computers as input. It then converts the HTML code into graphics and text. The output takes the form of web pages being displayed on the screen.

To put it bluntly, software developers write a program that instructs the computer on how to solve a particular problem. A big problem in any language or country, be it Java programmer Sydney or elsewhere is the aggregate of smaller problems. As a software developer, you need to solve the small problems first to arrive at the answer to the big problem. Solving a problem can take a lot of your time.
