Moving house is expensive enough and although we might have a lovely new home to appreciate it doesn't necessarily mean the decor is to our taste

Best place to start when decorating a new home are the kid's rooms, a dull room with old-fashioned wallpaper and old carpet can quickly and cheaply be transformed into a really pretty room that a young child or teenager will love. Also once the room is completed it means the youngsters are more likely to want to stay in them, leaving you the rest of the house to get on with and some space for yourselves.
The cheapest way to decorate is to buy the paint and brushes and get painting yourself! Just splash some bright colours on the bedroom walls, then jazz it up even more by adding wall stickers or transfers, they're cheap to buy and look really funky.
Take a look at what you have already in the way of accessories and furniture and see if there are ways to make them look as good as new, like recovering an old armchair and lightshade in new material, throwing a piece of fabric over existing furniture is a quick and easy way to transform the look and feel of a room, painting an old mirror frame can give it a new lease of life, and a fresh coat of paint on a wooden box is easily converted into storage space for toys.
Make sure you ask the kids what they want, no matter how young they are they still have an opinion and likes and dislikes, and it is their room after all. Girls will probably ask for pink or red whilst the boys will demand blue or green, whatever their taste this is the time to let them have some independence.
You don't have to buy expensive accessories for kids as they more than likely going to treat them roughly, make them cheap and cheerful instead and save the pennies for quality items for your own bedroom.
Add pillows in bright shades, if you're a dab hand at sewing then get the needle and cotton out and run up some cushion covers in funky fabrics, then simply throw on the kids' beds for extra style and comfort. You can recycle old fabrics or buy remnants from textile shops for next to nothing and piece them together for a unique look.
Shop around the second-hand shops in town for old pieces of furniture, like single wardrobes, that are still sturdy but may just require a new coat of paint. Solid wood items can sometimes be picked up at affordable prices, then sand them down and revarnish or paint in a colour that will coordinate with the room. Check for quality however before you buy, when buying chairs for example if can feel the frame through the fabric then this isn't a good deal as it's cheaply-made and won't last you long.
Don't be shy to hint to friends or family either, most people have a spare bit of furniture, perhaps a bedside table, hanging around that could be put to good use once it's been cleaned up.
All you need is a little creativity to give a room a great new look, it's not always money that counts! The kids will love giving you their ideas too and it won't hurt to let them have a say in the colour scheme and decor.
