Decorating Kindergarten Grad Clothes
Sure, kindergarten graduations should be a very happy and exciting event for your child and his or her classmates. But the ceremonies should also carry a certain weight of solemnity, since they mark your child's transition from an education full of songs, games and activities, to an increasingly formal, rigorous and text-based schooling.
"Big kids'" school will require a much higher level of intellectual exertion and emotional maturity from your child. At the same time, however, it is a significant part of growing up and becoming an independent, responsible and happy adult. Although no kindergartener would be able to really understand all of this, the graduation ceremony should be an opportunity for you to start introducing these concepts to your child.
One way to do this would be to observe some formality in the graduation rites. This is what makes kindergarten graduation robes so important, because they highlight dignity, poise and organization.
The dress is very similar to a collegiate cap and gown, though kindergarteners are allowed to wear much brighter colors. Depending on your child's preschool, certain guidelines may be imposed upon your choice of dress. Nevertheless, you should be able to add some personal touches to the dress to allow for some individuality, while still remaining within the parameters of the dress code.
Design tips
- Find out what accessories need to be included with the dress. Accessories include sashes, caps and tassels. You don't want to miss out on anything.
- Find out what cannot be worn by your child. His or her preschool may specify that certain things are not to be included in the dress. Just, in case, you'll want to know if there are any such restrictions.
- Think about ways that you can use the freedoms that the guidelines allow. For example, there may be no specific guidelines regarding whether or not to wear a sash, or to have a tassel. Or it is possible that certain colours are specified, but how to combine those colours is not. There can be many ways that you can work within the set parameters while still being creative and putting together a beautiful and unique graduation dress for your child.
- If you will be adding a patch to the gown, lay the gown flat first. Test the decoration against the gown before gluing or sewing it on. You'll also want to explore as many placement options as possible. A patch could go on the breast of the gown, or on the shoulders, or even on the graduation cap.
- You can also use shells, beads and other little items to make the gown more attractive.
Be sure to include you son or daughter in the design process. After all, you wouldn't want to spend time and money making a personalized dress that your child won't like. This will also be an opportunity to help him or her exercise creativity and responsibility.
