A General Rule of Thumb for deciding the size of your rug: Measure the room and deduct 18 inches to 2 ft. on each side of the room.
For example, if your room measures 12' x 15', you want an 8'x10' or 8'x11' rug. By taking out those 2 feet all around, you will leave a border of hardwood floor around the rug, creating a picture framing effect around the rug. This gives the rug more prominence in the room, and treats it like it is - a piece of art on the floor!
Let's begin with the standard rug sizes most rug manufacturers adhere to. Standard rug sizes are:
2'x3': An accent size, good for in front of a door, next to a bed, or in front of the sink.
3'x5': Same as a 2'x3'.
4'x6': Good for beside a bed or as an accent.
5'x'8' or 6'x9': Best size for under a coffee table in the living room (without any furniture on top of the rug). Also good for a bedroom, rug would be at the foot of the bed. Use runners or smaller accents beside the bed.
8'x10': Beginning of room sized rugs. Can be used in the dining room for table with 6 chairs. Also good for living room, furniture will be half on the rug and half off. Can be put under the bed (start half way down the bed.)
8'x11' or 9'x12' - Can be used in the dining room for a dining table with 8 chairs. Large enough in most living rooms for all furniture to be on top of the rug. Can go under the bed in the bedroom.
10'x14'. Good for dining room table with 10 chairs. Large living rooms and bedrooms will need 10'x14' as well.
12'x15': Beginning of Mansion sized rugs. Good for dining tables with 10 or more chairs, large living rooms and bedrooms.
12'x18': Mansion Size.
Open virtually any magazine on decorating and you'll find oriental rugs used as integral part of the decor. They blend wonderfully with contemporary, formal, ornate, casual, and traditional decorating styles. Oriental rugs are as adaptable to the casual living styles of today as to a formal board room.
The warmth and beauty of oriental rugs bring interest and luxury into almost every room in the house. Their amazingly resilient and durable qualities make them perfectly suited for heavily traveled areas as well as seldom-used parlors.
Wall to wall carpet is no reason to hesitate in purchasing an oriental rug. Properly placed on top of existing carpet, an oriental rug brings a new dimension to a room, and has the added benefit being easily transported if you move.
Oriental rugs don't necessarily have to be relegated to the floor. Flat-weave rugs such as Dhurries and Kilims make attractive wall hangings. Fragile antique rugs which are too worn for floor use and fine silk rugs are equally stunning when hung on a wall.
Before you set out to buy an oriental rug, measure the space you'd like it to cover. Then think about what colors in your room would be enhanced by the rug and whether you're looking for a complex design or something relatively simple. At www.rugimporters.com, we can help you determine which patterns are most likely to fit in with your current decor or serve as a basis for a room's decorating scheme. We even let you take the rug home on approval.
