Decorative Serapes And Mexican Blankets

Originally, serapes, or Mexican blankets as they have come to be known

, were intended to be used as cheap, accessible outer clothing for people. They were first worn by poor working people of Guatemala and Mexico. Serapes are referred to as the traditional striped woven cloth that makes up the Mexican blanket when they were worn as garments. Today, you can still see these serapes, and they are often recognized as a soft rectangular cloth with an opening in the middle for a person to insert his head through to wear.

Today there are several other names that these cloths are known by, including falsa blankets and Saltillos. These have evolved into a more versatile design. If you go on vacation to Central America and Mexico, you will see these serapes in dozens of small vendor stalls and markets all over. These are noted for their inter mixed bands or striped, very colorful design. If you take note, you will see that the largest stripe is always the primary color, which is repeated throughout the weave along with its complimentary colors. Because of the nature of these garments, every single one in existence is a unique, original work of textile art unlike any other.
