Decreasing Industrial Accidents In Campania But Increasing Fatal Accidents

The theme of industrial accidents has always been a bad news for Italy

. Italian people must admit that if its true that their Country is at the cutting edge in some field, is also true that it is experiencing an incredible deficit in other ones, among which the sector of security at work.

In some companies there is a total lack of abidance of the national legislation on the subject, like everyday tv and newspapers news items demonstrate. For example in September 2010 Striscia la Notizia, a famous tv information program broadcasted everyday on Channel 5, showed to the public eye a case of total lack of industrial safety norms and it caused quite an uproar because the irregular workers were redecorating just the Town Hall of Agropoli, near Salerno. From the recording you could clearly see that the worker were working without the protective helmet, some of them were dangerously leaning out of the scaffolds without any protective body harness and others were moving heavy cement slabs, on the narrow catwalks. This is the situation of many Italian sites in which every day the rules of industrial safety are not respected or are not even known.

Despite the fact that this remains a crucial issue for Italy, Istat affirms that the national average for industrial accidents recorded -1.9% and in problematic regions like Campania, it registered -6.5% and from the 26.296 cases of 2009, passed to 24.591 accidents in 2010 even if this positive number is pushed in the background as the number of fatal accidents has increased: from 67 deaths in 2009 to 72 in 2010 with an growth of 11% in foreigners fatal accidents.

The most worrying thing is then the increasing number of industrial diseases in Campania: in 2010 Inail registered 1.429 new cases, + 31.34% from 2009, against a national average of 21.9%. Analyzing the diseases denounced to Inail, it is impossible not to consider both the growth (always in Campania region) of cases of silicosis and asbestosis (+79.17% ) and the data regarding industrial diseases connected to the agricultural field (+255.74%).

The regional Inail superintender, Pietro Gaetano Iacoviello, commented on the data claiming that the growth of industrial diseases is caused by an upgrading of the workers protection standards. The most common disease, after the two mentioned above, is muscular, skeletal and respiratory damages.

Talking about such a tricky problem, in which the collected data must be analyzed even in the light of external variables that can influence its increase or decrease, we must say that the positive trend registered at the national level were influenced by the crisis: it is obvious that during a period in which the number of employed has declined, also the percentage of industrial accident must have been influenced.
