Defensively Driving

Defensive driving is one of those terms that we've all heard mentioned before, but which many of us still fail to fully understand. For example, when you are driving and someone in the lane next to you starts drifting into your lane or makes it apparent that they are going to drift into your lane, what is your reaction? For most of us, the reaction would be to honk our horn in an effort to alert the other driver that they are about to perform a dangerous maneuver, and for others of us, we will recognize what is happening and either slow down or speed up in order to avoid the collision. But for a small majority of us, we never even notice this happening because we are so distracted by something else either within our car or happening elsewhere that we miss this queue.

Whenever someone tries to cut over in front of someone else and winds up causing a car accident, whose fault is it? If you're not practiced in defensive driving, you might be inclined to think that it's the other person's fault. However, defensive driving means that you are always ready for anything that another driver might do. It means being vigilant and being practiced in knowing your surroundings and figuring out what sort of a reaction you are going to have or action you are going to take when push comes to shove and you are placed in a tense situation.

What most of us fail to realize is that our decisions while on the road affect the decisions that other people have to take when they start to get themselves together to drive somewhere. A person who fails to indicate that they are about to make a right hand turn off of a road but still slow down at the last minute may cause the person behind them to have to perform an evasive movement to move into the other lane (provided that there isn't already a car there). Similarly, someone who is waiting at a light to turn opposite of someone else who is also waiting to turn may wind up doing a sort of car dance as each of them waits for the other person to go.

Defensive driving is all about being aware of what other drivers are doing around you so that you can be prepared to react quickly if the need arises.
