The rise in popularity of stockings can more or less be traced back to the rise of women's hemlines

. As women's legs began to be on show much more by the middle of the 20th century, they were a stylish, sexy garment. Actresses began to popularise them even more so with their defining allure and sensuality factor.

The great thing is that they began to move from being an undergarment to looking good as a fashionable outer garment, covering the legs and keeping them warm. They began to be ideal to go with any garment except perhaps, micro mini-skirts as the decades moved on, and they add the definite edge of cool sophistication. Of course to wear stockings women needed the essential accessory of a suspender belt which was developed for this reason. Stockings need to be held up, unlike tights which fit snugly around the waist. Therefore the suspender belt was made as a thin garter belt which has a ring of clips draping down from the belt, which is usually made of a dainty and coloured lace.

The effect when wearing a suspender belt can be fabulously sexy, giving the wearer the luxury feel of a feminine lace garment next to her and the stockings beautifully covering her legs. This also allows for the skin to breathe in delicate parts whereby the more close fitting tights could encourage bacterial growth and infection. Today suspender belts are sold in many classy lingerie shops with matching bras and panties, all in the same tones and delicate, pretty lace. They have become associated with Valentine's Day, gifts and romance.

A more modern form of stockings whereby women can ditch the suspender belt and the stockings can remain in place without fear of falling down is the invention of hold ups. Strong elastic is built into the top of the garment to enable them to stay up. These are not so popular as different women have different thigh widths and if the fit is too tight, the elastic can leave a red mark. On the opposite scale, if hold ups are too wide, the garments will fall down, causing untold embarrassment. Manufacturers are, however, continually working on development of more modern means to alleviate these difficulties. A garter can be worn as a sort of half way mark and worn across the top of the stockings to help keep them in place. Made of matching lace, this can look very striking
