Geothermal energy produces electricity with the use of extremely hot temperatures such as volcanoes, geysers and even hot springs, on the other hand the pump does not produce electricity or heat, and it only uses a transport system to transfer that natural heat from the earth to another location.

Another term you need to know of is geothermal heating. This refers to the use of natural heat from the earth to heat up a liquid medium. A heat source is a term which means the source of heat with which the medium gets the rise in the temperature, this location can vary since the system can work in reverse. It can mean the underground portion of the piping when the device works to provide heat and on the other hand it can refer to your home interior when the device works as a cooling system. The heat sink can refer to the location where the heat is brought to. Usually refers to the home interior when heat is needed and it can mean the earth when heat is being taken away from.
