Definition of What The Independent Mission Is

The Independent Mission is a church based in Monongahela, Pennsylvania in the United States. The name of the church is significant for two reasons. First, because it is Independent; secondly, because it is a Mission. The details and reasoning of these two names are outlined below.

First, the word Independent in the title of the church refers to the self-governing state of the church. As far as the internal church government goes, The Independent Mission is entirely self-governing. Externally, This Church is independent from all Protestant religious denominations because of the universal state of sin and apostasy that has influenced these churches in the present day. Beliefs in ecclesiastical separation are important to This Church. They adhere to the New Testament words of the Apostle Paul in II Corinthians 6.17, when he said "Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you."

The Independent Mission is also Independent historically. Jesus Christ was the first founder of the Independent Church. This fact is proved by the book of Acts and the epistles of the Apostle Paul, which show that the first Christian churches were all Independent churches. No hierarchy was in place above these early local congregations. In the history of Protestant churches, when the oppression that reigned under the Roman Catholic Church and the Pope somewhat abated, Independency revived in the mid to late 1500s. This was done through the work of Independent pastors, Reverends Robert Browne, Henry Barrowe, John Greenwood, and John Penry. Three of these men, Reverends Barrowe, Greenwood, and Penry were called heretics by the Episcopalian Church and were put to death for their faith. The word Independent chiefly describes the Independent Form of Church Government that exists among Independent Churches. The historic standard of the Independent Church is the Scripture, while the theological position of the Independent Church is reformed. The Independent public confession of faith that This Church holds to is the celebrated Savoy Declaration of 1658.

The Mission is the second word that makes up the name of This Church. Etymologically, the word Mission defines as "a sending forth." This definition is historically what a Mission used to be. In old times, Missions were religious organizations presenting Scripture and maintaining an outreach position, affecting many lives. This Church has maintained a constant engagement in this type of ministry. There is no better term that describes this Church more than The Independent Mission. The word Mission describes exactly what it is.

The Independent Mission is led by Dr. Paul Spence, who has a doctorate in divinity and has been preaching for thirty years. The motto of the Mission is, "The Light shineth in darkness," a phrase taken from John 1.5. An old-fashioned candle glowing in the center of a circle of darkness is the seal of This Church. This is chosen especially because the size of This Church is small. The single candle in the motto emblem represents their Work and the impact it has on the world. Believing that God is in sovereign control of the world, The Independent Mission looks to him as their sole guide and leader. Flowers surrounding the border of the seal of the Mission represent the Christian testimony that the Mission works to exemplify, adorning the truths of the Gospel and historic Independency by this Testimony.
