DREXEL HILL All the battle stations were manned at the McCain/Palin campaign headquarters in Congressman Craig Williams' office in Drexel Hill on the evening of Oct. 14.As one or two volunteers sat at the front desk, distributing yard signs, buttons, and signing up walk-in volunteers, over a dozen more handled the phones, calling registered Republicans and the undecided voters of Delaware County. Their purpose is two-fold: to make sure voters know about candidates Sen. John McCain and Senator Williams, and to verify where their polling place is located.
They know this is an important election. They also know that Delaware County is crucial to a victory.
"This is ground zero," said Mitch Vidovich, Campaign Field director for Southeastern Pennsylvania. "If we do well in Delaware County, we will win this state. If we win this state, Barack Obama can not win the presidential election."
According to Vidovich, the office conducts volunteer activities seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The volunteers come from all over Delaware County and are diverse in age and ethnic background. Most put in over 10 hours a week, after their day jobs and on the weekends.
"I volunteered because I know it is a close election," said Ralph of Broomall (who requested his last name be withheld). "I try to encourage other people to volunteer."
A row of temporary phone banks line the walls of the office, which are adorned with red, while and blue streamers and signs supporting McCain and Williams. The office is also complete with life-size cardboard cut-outs of Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin.
Jim Bryan of St. Davids is acting as office manager at the Drexel Hill headquarters. This is first time Bryan has extensively involved in a presidential election and he says the experience has been rewarding.
"It's absolutely fascinating," he says. "I got involved because Pennsylvania is a very important state in the election."
And that is precisely the reason most of the volunteers were inspired to take action this time around.
"This is the world series of presidential elections," Vidovich says. "We are definitely seeing many people getting involved because of the magnitude of the election."
Rudy Breglia of Glen Mills is a first-time volunteer who has become so involved that he is now the unofficial phone bank captain' at the local headquarters. He strongly believes McCain is the superior choice in this election.
"It's a matter of character," he says. "McCain has shown character throughout his career."
The volunteers are planning on increasing their hours as the election nears.
"We're doing well in Delaware County," says Vidovich. "We're in it to win it."
