Beijing, Chinas imposing capital possesses a colourful and tumultuous history which

has provided it with a magnificent array of historic buildings and structures including majestic temples, palaces and immense stone walls and gates. Fragrant Hills Park is a major tourist attraction in Beijing. Located at the base of the Western Mountains in the northwestern section of Beijing, the park includes maple tree covered hills, a pine-cypress forest, persimmon and smoke trees as well as beautifully landscaped sections with typical Chinese architecture and cultural artifacts. The parks name refers to its highest peak, Xianglu Feng, or Incense Burner Peak. The construction of the park dates to the Jin Dynasty and it was expanded by later rulers. Emperor Qianlong added many new pavilions, halls and gardens. In later years the park and its relics were damaged in two major foreign attacks. The Chinese government in the modern era has been continuously involved in the development and renovation of the park. The scenery of the park is particularly resplendent in the autumn season, when the bright red smoke tree leaves transform the mountainside to a sea of colour. The cable cars that run through the park provide a panoramic view of the area and are very popular among the tourists who visit the park. Another attraction is the Bright Temple, an expansive lamasery complex in the Tibetan tradition built for the sixth Panchen Lama. A magnificent tiled archway and pagoda hint at the majesty of the original structure. Other highlights at the park include the Tranquility Green Lake and the Fragrant Temple.
