In all probability people in Dell came to a conclusion that there is a gap between Inspiron and XPS notebook series so they decided to fill that gap with new Studio series of notebooks. This new notebook brand was presented to public in June this year and models sold under this name are intended for home users. Studio series is positioned between Inspiron and XPS series not only by its market position and price tag but also it is visually mix of those two series. By its design it leans more to XPS series (logically) because it is more attractive.
Hinges that hold top cover (monitor) are oddly shaped but not that roundish like on XPS series. We tested model with top cover that was colored in red (brick) color. In center can be found metallic Dell logo and surface of cover is mat: manufacturer calls it "micro satin finish". This kind of surface finish makes it pleasant on touch but also fingerprint resistant. Del Studio 1535 can be found in various color variations so all trendy users will be satisfied with this option for sure. Besides nice looks, top cover is characterized by respectable firmness, so even harder pressure on top cover won't result in picture deformation.
Design
A hybrid between the XPS and Inspiron series, the
ibm thinkpad r60 batteryStudio series manages to deliver a sturdy industrial design, with a rubberised laptop lid that comes in eight colours blue, red, purple, grey, pink, orange, green and black. They all come with a black trim around the side edges of the monitor (known as the "U-Trim" in Dell-speak) unless you order grey, in which case you can opt for a black, red, blue or pink U-Trim.
The mouse pad is slightly recessed, and to the right of this is an inlaid design that looks a bit like a synoptic chart although we keep thinking it's the result of a spilt coffee that no one managed to wipe off successfully. To the far right is a fingerprint reader, at the top of the chassis near the monitor hinge is a speaker bar, and at the top of the monitor itself is the webcam and built-in microphone.
The hinge is inherited from the XPS range, and is quite strong, with a power button on the right-hand side of the laptop where the hinge meets the chassis. Upon powering up, the media buttons at the top of the chassis scan from left to right in a pleasing white glow. A button on the other side of the hinge loads the Wi-Fi Catcher application in Windows, showing relative strength of all the wireless networks in your vicinity.
Keyboard and area above it are colored black, while rest is shiny grey. Palm rest is decorated with pattern that resembles lines on topographic maps or marble. Quality of keyboard is questionable. Enter key is small (we prefer big Enter key) and keyboard under pressure bends in the middle. Although it sounds bad, in practice it performs quite well. Fact is that keyboard bends under pressure but keys have deeper stroke so typing experience is in overall very pleasant experience. Touchpad has clearly marked areas for vertical and horizontal scroll with two buttons beneath. Instead of usual additional (multimedia) keys above keyboard Studio 1535 has touch sensitive key bar that emit white light when active. Beside multimedia keys there is also Eject key that replaces one usually present on optical device bay. This solution may sound odd but since Studio 1535 has slot-in DVD writer without Eject key it is perfectly logical.
Glare monitor that is used on this model has nicely saturated colors and good viewing angles. Above it is located integrated web camera with 2MPix resolution and sharp and clear picture. Web camera software has few interesting options. One of them is "Face tracking". When this option is enabled camera will try to center your face on screen. Also this software has options for adding numerous effects in real time: adding beard, hair, glasses, animated angel and devil, replacement of background etc. This will guarantee you hours of good fun. Speakers are above average and they lack "deepness" for a complete sound picture. Since dial-up is almost extinct as way of connecting to Net there is no integrated modem in Studio 1535. As all other connectors are concerned there are plenty of them (take a look at specifications). Two headphone outputs located on left side allows listening of music for two persons at same time (or watching movies for instance). By all means most interesting accessory of Dell Studio 1535 is cute remote control small enough to fit in Express slot. Although it has only basic commands it can greatly simplify multimedia management.
Features
In what is set to become a common appearance due to Intel's inclusion of eSATA in the Centrino 2 spec, on the left-hand side is a combined eSATA and USB port. The hole in the chassis is slightly wider than usual for a USB port, and the port itself has two extra notches at the top to support the wider eSATA plug a clever way to include both standards and save on space.
Including this port there are four USB ports in total, one FireWire, HDMI, VGA, gigabit Ethernet, SD/MMC/MS card reader, a microphone port, two headphone ports, an Express Card 54 slot and a slot-loading DVD+-RW drive populating the sides. As an indication of the lowering importance of dial up, a 56Kbps modem is included as a separate, USB powered device. A telephone cable and four-prong adapter are also in the box, and aside from the manuals and install discs, nothing else is included.
On the software side, the laptop we received was running Vista Home Premium, and came equipped with Microsoft Works, Roxio Creator, and the crapware infestation of choice comes from Google, both as Google Desktop, and as Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer. An eBay link on the desktop reinforces the fact that the desktop is for sale.
Dell
HP Compaq Business Notebook 6710b Batteryhas also included a new network tool, but is more annoying than helpful, consistently reminding you to turn on the Guest account (usually not a clever thing to do security-wise) and in a few circumstances ran the "Network Repair Wizard" even when our connection was completely fine. All these custom networking applications vendors attempt to design are clearly a perceived shortcoming in the way Windows does its networking, but we've yet to see one of these applications that are actually any good. Curiously, the standard nag-ware antivirus wasn't bundled, however, checking the Dell website reveals that the laptop should be shipped with a 30-day trial of Trend Micro.
Conclusion
When we talk about performances of Dell Studio 1535 we must say that they have two faces. Better one shows itself while using CPU intensive applications because of newest Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.1GHz. Integrated graphics can be used for playing older games but you can forget on playing any of newer game releases. There are models equipped with ATi 3450 graphics card but even this card is not suitable for newest games, it performs much better than Intel X3100. Good news is that Studio 1535 has 2GB of RAM.
