Dementia Symptoms

There are various dementia symptoms and you need to identify them so that you will be able to address them properly

. Or you need to identify them for the sake of knowing if your parent or grandparent has dementia. The symptoms might already be there and you are just not able to notice them because some of these symptoms start at a snail's pace.

Memory loss is the most common age dementia symptom that is evident in forgetting things and failing to remember them again. This is displayed by the repeating of questions already answered, without ever remembering that the question had been asked or answered previously. Another symptom is the mispronunciation of words and making speech indecipherable, leading to frustrated outbursts of anger from seemingly out of nowhere.

Age-related dementia can affect one's sense of judgment, cause difficulties in concentrating, and can change personality. About 5% of people over age 65 are stricken with Alzheimer's, which is the most common form of age dementia. That percentage increases to 20-25% in elderly people who have reached the age of 80 or over.

There are different treatment options for age dementia, depending on the case of the person and how severe the dementia is. These treatment options range from tranquilizers, anti-depressants, cognitive enhancing medication, and anti-convulsion drugs.

Most elderly people are on more than one prescription medication. A reaction to a drug or drugs is another important thing to be on the lookout for. Drug side effects can look like dementia. This did happen to a friend of ours. The result could be, a doctor will put you on even more drugs, and the problem could go on undetected. And don't forget to eat an anti inflammation diet. You just might delay the onset of dementia.

Memory loss

Short and long term memory can be a problem. Forgetting a common phone number, directions or how to turn on an appliance can be common and if repeated can be an early sign of Alzheimers.

Language problems

Look out for any sign of common words being replaced by descriptions. One example may be someone asking "To turn that thing on that we watch on" when talking about the TV.

My own mom taught school most of her life. She was highly organized and extremely independent. She read constantly and became quite adept at oil painting. At the age of 76 she moved closer to my sister and I, but her canvases and brushes never seemed to make it out of the moving boxes. I bought her a VCR for Christmas, hoping that renting movies could help her shake her newly-found disinterest in life.

Dementia symptoms can cover a range and are not always consistent from one individual to another, but there are common signs that one can look for. Forgetfulness is one of the most common and well-known symptoms of dementia. While forgetting things only to remember them later is something that happens to all of us from time to time, a person with dementia, particularly as it progresses, will not only increasingly forget things but will not remember them later as well.
