Demystifying Different Types Of Fonts

There are various different types of font styles available today

. It can be a bit difficult to choose which one to use for your project, worse some styles are misleading or simply a bad choice for certain projects. Beyond that most fonts have several styles such as serif or sans serif font styles. There are again even more differences between print design and digital design. There are matters of practicality to choosing fonts that can get in the way of design, as well as the sheer number of combinations to choose from.

Traditional Fonts

With respect to normal fonts they are usually divided into serif and sans serif font styles. You can find a great many fonts that have both versions as well. A serif, is the fancy details you see on the edges of letters, such as the points that branch off of the ends on a "l", that make it resemble a number one. This stylization was designed a long time ago. Way back then and even now, printed text was rather messy. The process wasn't very advanced and it could be hard to read. So these extra features were added onto the letters to make it easier to distinguish them when read. Times New Roman is probably the most famous font in this category as it was and is heavily used for printed copy such as, newspapers.

Sans serif is what the basic letters look like. At least when you write them out by hand you are not likely to use serifs or any other fancy details. These fonts are a lot more popular with high resolution and quality print. It is increasingly common in digital design to use sans serif. This is because it is seen as being cleaner, smoother font styles. Since both are just as recognizable on monitors or high resolution printing there isn't a need for the serif details. Many people also believe that the smooth designs are both less distracting and look better. Thus increasing readability. It is fine to use either one, depending on your preference. The differences usually only matter to typographers.

Choosing your font

The major problem is choosing what base type of font to use with your project. That can be difficult. There are many types of font that serve many different purposes, the only iron clad rule everyone agrees on is don't use comic sans. Well, except for everyone who likes comic sans. These are some useful guidelines. Above all else, if you want someone to read something, make it readable. This means that avoid using fancy gothic or cursive fonts, they are a pain to read.

You may also consider using fonts for style and aesthetics. For example if you want to have some text that is purposely hard to read than it is fine to use a font that emulates handwriting. However, it is recommended that if you do this you have a more readable version below it. So the fancy font is nothing more than a picture that the reader doesn't need to struggle through reading.
