Dental Bridges And Crowns

Chances are, at some point in your life you will find yourself in need of some sort of a tooth restoration

. Whether you have a tooth that is chipped or broken or you have completely lost a tooth, your dentist has the full capability to restore your smile. Some of the most popular ways to do this is through the use of either a dental crown or a dental bridge. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you are in need of a dental restoration, don't hesitate to ask your dentist about crowns and bridges.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is directly attached on top of your tooth to improve its size, strength, shape and/or appearance. A crown is used to correct a chipped, broken or otherwise disfigured tooth. To put a crown in, your dentist will apply anesthetic to the area and then reduce its size to ensure that there is enough room for the crown to fit comfortably in your mouth. After this, a detailed impression will be taken in order to create a crown that will fit in perfectly with your other teeth. The impression is then sent to a dental lab, where it will usually take between two and three weeks for your permanent crown to be created. In between appointments, your dentist will provide you with a temporary crown to wear.

Once your permanent crown arrives, your dentist will do a final check to make sure the fit and coloring are correct. If they are, he or she will then use a special cement to permanently attach the crown to your tooth. Once a crown is put in, it will both function and look like any of your natural teeth.

Dental Bridges

While a dental crown is used to help restore a broken or chipped tooth, a dental bridge is utilized to fully replace a lost tooth. A bridge is an artificial tooth that is held in place on either side by dental crowns. To put a bridge in, your dentist will begin by anesthetizing the area and reducing the size of the two teeth that will receive dental crowns. After this, an impression will be taken of the area in order to create a bridge that will fit in perfectly to your bite. While your permanent bridge is being created at a dental lab, your dentist will again be able to provide you with a temporary bridge to wear in the meantime. Once your final bridge arrives, your dentist will do a last check to make sure the fit and coloring are correct. If they are, he or she will then use a special cement to attach your bridge, which should last about 15 years in your mouth.
