Dental Bridges Or Dental Crowns Can Fully Restore Your Smile

If you find yourself with a chipped, broken or missing tooth

, you don't need to panic. Modern dental technology allows for your dentist to effectively replace your missing tooth and restore your smile where it once was. There are several options to do this, but some of the most popular are the use of dental crowns and bridges. If you are having a problem with one of your teeth, don't hesitate to talk to your Appleton dentist about dental crowns and bridges.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth shaped cap that is installed directly on top of your tooth to increase its strength, size, shape and/or appearance. Once your dentist has decided that a dental crown is the best option for you, he or she will begin the procedure by anesthetizing the area. Your existing tooth will then be filed down in order to create enough room for a replacement tooth to fit comfortably in your mouth. Your dentist will then take an impression of the area. This will allow your dentist to create a crown that will fit in perfectly with your bite. This impression is then sent to a dental lab, where it will take between two and three weeks for your permanent crown to be created. In between appointments, you will wear a temporary crown that your dentist will give you so that you don't have a gap in your smile.

Once your permanent crown arrives from the dental lab, your dentist will give it a final check to make sure that the fit and coloring are perfectly correct. If they are, he or she will then permanently cement crown into place. Once a crown is put in, it will both function and look like any of your normal teeth. No one will be able to tell that your crown is any different than the rest of your teeth.

Dental Bridges

While a dental crown is used to restore a broken or chipped tooth, a dental bridge is what dentists use to replace a missing tooth. A bridge is made up of an artificial replacement tooth that is held in place on either side by dental crowns. To put a bridge in, your dentist will begin by anesthetizing the area and filing down the two teeth that will receive crowns. An impression of the area will then be taken and sent to a dental lab. Your permanent bridge will take between two and three weeks to be created. Just like with a crown procedure, your dentist will be able to give you a temporary bridge to wear in between appointments. Once your final bridge arrives, your dentist will thoroughly check it to make sure everything is perfectly correct. If it is, he or she will use special cement to permanently attach it to your teeth. Once put in, a bridge can last for 15 years or longer in some cases.
