A dental crown is a cap that is shaped and fashioned in such a way as to give it the appearance of a natural tooth. They are positioned over teeth that are naturally weak, that have decayed or been broken, or that have some another type of damage. These come in several different types which will be discussed below.
One of the most common designs of these is metal crowns. Most will be used on small children's temporary back teeth so that they do not affect the appearance of the mouth. Normally gray in color, they can be made or either nickel or chromium.
Most people already know what porcelain dental crowns are all about. Though made of porcelain, they are made to look like your natural teeth. They are attached to a base made of metal. Their color can also be made to blend in with your other teeth. These are often used to restore front teeth. At times, the worn porcelain will require replacement due to chipping or breakage.
One other available kind is called a resin crown. Selecting the right color will help them blend in with the neighboring teeth too. Resin implants, as opposed to those made of porcelain and fused with a metal base, are not as widely used because they are simply not as durable.
