Though the thought of getting your wisdom teeth removed is a daunting
, and just thinking about it makes you hurt, if there is no room in your mouth for four more teeth you should get them removed as soon as possible. There are many reasons why wisdom teeth need to be removed; one of those reasons is that there is simply not enough space in your mouth.
Sometimes the mouth is already full after the 12-year molars come in, and any more simply will not fit. These cases need to be removed very soon because the back molars are trying to come in, but cannot because there isn't any place for them to go.
This can be very painful for someone, because of the pressure of the molars trying to come out of the gums. Another reason to get your wisdom teeth removed is because they are impacting.
Impacting molars means that they are coming in side-ways are pushing against your back molars. These can push on the surrounding teeth, causing them to move forward, creating a domino effect on the teeth.
Another reason for getting your wisdom teeth removed is over-crowding. This means that there is no room in your mouth, and the emerging molars will cause the rest of your teeth to shift.
If overcrowding is not taken care of, all of the teeth in your mouth may move, altering your bite, smile, and alignment. This type of damage can only be fixed by removing the emerging wisdom teeth.
If your dentist or orthodontist suggests that you remove your wisdom teeth, you should follow their advice. Those last four molars have a huge effect on the way everything in your mouth works.
The inside of the tooth is known as the pulp chamber, which houses several nerves. This travels down the length of the tooth into the gums; these are known as root canals.
Another common procedure is root canal therapy, or just a root canal. This surgery may be necessary for one of many reasons, but all lead to an infection or trauma that hits the nerve inside of the tooth.
The first reason is tooth decay. The rotting away of the tooth penetrates through the enamel and the dentil into the pulp.
Another reason is the tooth has become abscessed or infected. The infection is caused from decay, which gets all the way down to the nerve.
Trauma, like a chipped or broken dentil, can also expose the nerve. Or if the tooth is slowly dying because of age, past trauma, or lack of care, the nerve can become exposed.
Root canal therapy is performed by dentists using drills and files. The drill makes a small hole in the tooth so that the nerve can be reached.
The dentist will then use small files to remove the nerve and any infected tissue inside of the pulp chamber. The entire nerve is removed so as to prevent any toothaches or infections after the procedure.
After the entire chamber has been cleaned out and the nerve removed, it is them dried and sealed. Typically a crown is placed on the tooth to cover it since it is basically dead and will become brittle and discolored over time.
Braces are also a common oral procedure, typically performed on teenagers, but have been growing in popularity among adults. Some people need braces for oral health, but others just want them for cosmetic reasons.
The most common cause for braces is to straighten teeth that are crooked or misaligned. Crooked dentils can cause problems with peoples' bites and they way they chew and process their food.
If a bite is off, it can lead to larger problems in the jaw and even cause headaches and backaches. Braces can also be used to correct bites.
Many people have over bites, in which is when the upper jaw extends the teeth too far forward. There are also people with under bites, when the bottom teeth jut out farther than the upper teeth.
Both of these are bad for the jaw since they can lead to tension in the jaw and will keep you from biting properly. Deep over bites and under bites (when the teeth bite into the tissue of the other side of the jaw) can also cause bone damage.
