Dental veneers, or dental laminates, also known as porcelain veneers

, are thin layers of restorative material that are bonded to the surface of teeth to either improve the patients appearance or protect the surface of a patients damaged tooth.

Dental veneers are wafer-thin shells of ceramic material, chemically bonded to the front or faade of a tooth. Dental veneers are regularly used by dentists as a means of creating aesthetic changes for teeth that are stained, damaged, chipped or uneven.

Often, all materials are available in stock at a dentists office location. Dental veneers make use of high tech bonding materials to attach a slim shell of ceramic material to the tooth. Even if the tooth is largely broken, it becomes sturdy and durable when a veneer is correctly bonded to it.

All types of teeth - molars, premolars, incisors and canines - can benefit from the veneer procedure.

As soon as a tooth is ready to obtain a dental veneer, the enamel on the front face of the tooth must be ground at the locations where the dental veneer will be bonded. In each situation, the dentist's aim is to choose the right shade and shape for the veneer, and to trim the tooth's facade to the proper proportions.

To ease the process, before the trimming of the tooth, you and your dentist may decide to use an anesthetic for the procedure. The dentist may trim off the quantity of tooth enamel on the order of .5 to .7 millimeters, similar to the thickness of the shell of a chicken egg.

The advantages of dental veneers are many. As contrasted with superficial dental bonding, the dental veneer's facade is made of porcelain. So, dental veneers are able to resist staining due to the consumption of red wine, coffee, tea, tobacco and other substances known to cause stains, better than dental bonding.

In addition, the expected life of the superficial bond is similar to that of a normal tooth. So the combined effect of stain resistance and the strong bonding process make dental veneers a great choice for restorative dental work, and the building of a beautiful smile.
