Dental Work Has A Purpose

Making time in your busy schedule to visit your dentist on a regular basis is a wise decision

. Just like when you visit your medical doctor, your dentist will do a complete examination. Your dentist will take care of your oral needs and a help find a solution to any problem areas. Many fear the dentist, afraid the dental work will hurt or are just simply afraid of the unknown.

However, making a conscious effort to see your dentist routinely, as suggested by the dental community will hopefully make you less likely to encounter problems or painful procedures. Routine check-ups can make your next visit to the dentist carefree and just merely preventive. It is recommended that you visit your dentist every 6 months to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What to expect at your dental appointment

When you visit your dentist for a routine check-up, you can expect the following: teething cleaning, an examination, and possibly x-rays. If your dental office employs dental hygienists, they will most likely conduct the cleaning, though some dentists prefer to do the cleaning. While cleaning your teeth they will remove any built up plague by scraping below the gum line, which can cause periodontal disease (gum disease). After the scraping, they will also polish the teeth and then finish off by flossing.

The dentist will want to do an examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth after the cleaning. This is done to see if there are any problems developing and what precautionary measures can be taken to ensure extra dental work is not needed. If a problem is found it will be treated as soon as possible. Your dentist may also suggest having dental x-rays done. This is also a preventive measure, or could help in determine if you have impacted teeth, such as your wisdom teeth.

The Drill on Cavities

Unfortunately, even though we try our best to take care of our teeth and gums and practice good oral hygiene, problems can still arise. Filling cavities are among the most common dental procedures done by your dentist. Cavities develop from plaque that has eaten away the outer lay of enamel on your tooth. A hole will appear and will grow deeper and deeper until the cavity is filled.

A cavity can be quite painful as it can turn into a tooth ache. Until the cavity is properly taken care of, the pain will not dissipate. Cavities are most common in the molars that are located at the back of your mouth, because they are hardest to reach with your tooth brush and these teeth have grooves and pits in them that make them more prone to have food residue stuck in them.

A Mouth full of Teeth

The average adult will have 28 permanent teeth, with an additional 4 wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth can cause problems for some adults, which can lead to extractions. All teeth have specific names which include: incisors, canines, bicuspids, molars and wisdom teeth. Each tooth is important, and ensuring your are always taking the proper care to keep them clean and healthy is vital. Always remembering to brush and floss your teeth can help tremendously with the good health of your mouth, as well as being diligent that your visit your dentist regularly.
