Most people care about their teeth
Most people care about their teeth. They are, arguably, one of the most important bones in the body, and certainly the most visible. However, many of the local people do not really think about their teeth, except for going to a Chesterfield dentist every six month, or often only once per year. However, tooth care is so much more than a quick visit to the dentist and should be taken with a proactive approach rather than a passive one.
Since kindergarten, people have been taught to brush their teeth at least twice per day. For most, this means first thing in the morning, and again before bed. However, this is usually not enough, especially in this day and age, where much of the food produced contains sugar in some form. Many dentists will now advise patients to brush after each meal. This will immediately eliminate leftover food from the crevices of the teeth, and it will allow the body's saliva to perform its job much more effectively. That is, the saliva has reign to rinse the teeth repeatedly, gently brushing off bacteria and germs that may otherwise damage the teeth.
Nearly as important as remembering to brush, is to floss the teeth. A significant portion of the surface area of the tooth is hidden in areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. In addition, no matter what the commercials may tell you about special foaming toothpaste, they will not get clean if a conscious effort is not made to actually go in and manually clean away plaque, bacteria, and tartar buildup. Flossing, to many, is a chore, however. In addition, to floss daily (once per day is often enough since the gums will get raw and sore if it is done too often) can become overwhelming. However, there are many ways around the conventional string floss. Flossing picks are a quick and easy way to get in the habit, and they work marvelously with children who are not yet coordinated enough to handle traditional floss. If once-per-day still is not an option, a person should strive to floss as often as possible, and not go longer than one week neglecting the between teeth spaces.
Brushing and flossing are the most proactive ways to keep the teeth happy and healthy. However, dental health extends far beyond just the morning, hopefully noon, and evening brush. After anything goes in the mouth, a person should swish with water to help cleanse the teeth from unwanted germs. In fact, drinking fluorinated tap water has been proven to help keep teeth healthier for longer (bottled water does not contain fluoride, and does not help strengthen enamel). Combine drinking plenty of water with eating a diet that is low in sugars and processed foods, and a person can live a long happy life with few to no cavities.
