Dentists used to do nearly all their dental service work on their own

. However, today, dentists hire dental assistants and dental hygienists to provide more of the basic preventative dental care and dental paperwork so that the dentists can focus more on the service of fixing dental problems.

About three hundred years ago dentists would either be traveling doctors who would extract teeth or dentists would be the barber who cut your hair that happened to have the kind of tools that were right for extracting teeth, or dentists would be the jeweler who could make a dental bridge for you made from gold. These were the beginnings of dentists. Even before that, the Greeks and Egyptians are examples of ancient cultures who had dentists and dental services. But, nothing like today's dental services.

Dentists today have more technology and dental tools at their disposal than ever before. Dentists also have dental school in the United States whereas before the 1800's there didn't exist a dental school anywhere in the United States. Because of dental school and dentists training and dentists services, today we have better dental health than ever before. Because of dental insurance, dentists services are more affordable than ever before.

Dentists now perform more complicated oral surgeries today than ever before because of the dental tools and pain-killer technology of today. Before anesthetics dental services couldn't do the oral surgeries that are performed today. Nor, could dentists perform small intricate work like root canal therapy without the very small dental drills and dental files that exist today.

Dental hygienists take care of more of the preventative dental care services and preventative dental care education for dental patients so that dentists can focus more on fixing the dental problems caused by poor preventative dental care or poor dental genes. Dentists will hire dental hygienists to work in the general dentistry to service dental patients just before the dentists come in to inspect the dental patient's mouth and oral health.

Dentists pay an oral hygienist to clean and polish a dental patient's teeth as well as perform other dental preventative care tests and measurements such as measuring dental gums and tissues and performing a dental x-ray of the bone and teeth. Dentists will then come in and inspect the preventative dental cleaning as well as the dental tests. Dentists will perform other dental inspections and tests that are not on the agenda of a dental hygienist.

When dentists and dental hygienists and dental assistants work together within a dentistry and communicate well throughout the dental services process, a dentistry will be able to see more dental patients as well as treat more dental patients.

Dental support and dental services can be found more and more in local areas because there are more trained dentists and dental hygienists. Dentists work is included in health services and often a health services insurance plan will include routine dental visits for preventative care services as part of the health services insurance coverage.

The American Dental Association helps regulate the quality of dental services that dentists provide. The American Dental Association also regulates the quality of dental school training and dental licensing required for dentists to practice dental services on the public.
