Design Tips To Make A Small Breezeway Spacious

While a breezeway may be physically small, it does not have to feel cramped and cluttered

. A few organizational and decorative changes can make this hardworking space look and feel bigger.

Clutter Busting

Breezeways often turn into dumping grounds for shoes, coats, backpacks, toys and sports gear. Your first step in improving the appearance of your breezeway is to de-clutter. If you have a closet in the breezeway organize it and add vertical shelving to augment hanging space; this is a great way to corral shoes and provide space for baskets that store gloves, scarves and any smaller items.

If you do not have a closet, consider an armoire or free-standing cabinet to hold coats. A bench with shoe rack below near the entry is another clutter solution as are modular pieces that offer seating and open cubbies that each member of the family can use to stay organized. Get rid of unused sporting gear, move it to the garage or hang your tennis rackets or hockey sticks on the wall and make them part of your decorative theme.

Use Color, Light and Pattern to Your Advantage

Lighter colors and natural light brighten the breezeway from top to bottom will help the space live large.

1. On the ceiling, off-white is the best choice and a flat paint has less shine so it will appear to float above the space. If the breezeway has ceiling molding, paint it in the same light shade as the ceiling; this will eliminate a visual border that makes the ceiling feel low and intrusive. If your breezeway does not have a lot of windows, installing a skylight will brighten things up considerably.

2. Choose light colors for the wall as well. Pale neutrals or pastels are the most expansive. Striped wallpapers can be used to make a room feel taller or wider by running the stripe in the direction that you wish to expand.

3. Keep wood trim white or in the same light shade as the walls for a seamless look that appears to go on forever. If you want contrast, paint the trim white and it will pop against any other color.

4. Use mirrors to trick the eye and add reflected light. They can be used between or across from windows to capture the light or add the illusion of additional windows. Choose wall art with reflective metal or mirrored accents for more light reflection.

5. Keep window treatments light and open to the rays of the sun. Pale colored fabrics in light weight fabrics will seem airy and breezy. Roll up bamboo shades or flat folding shades can be hung beneath fabric panels for light control and privacy when needed.

6. When it comes to flooring, pattern can be used to make the breezeway seem larger or wider. Choose patterned tiles with a horizontal or vertical pattern and install them in the direction that adds the desired illusion of space. Horizontal patterns expand width and vertical patterns expand length. Area rugs placed near the entry passages can be used to make those spaces feel brighter and larger as well depending on the color and patterns that you choose.

7. If you have room for a couple of chairs and perhaps a cafe style table, choose wicker or wrought iron. Open patterns let the backdrop of the room show through and feel more expansive. Glass top tables that allow the floor to show through are also a great choice.

8. Add a few wall sconces or exterior lanterns to the inside of your breezeway to provide nighttime lighting. Hanging paper lanterns, candles and hurricanes, or themed string lights are other great ideas for letting you enjoy your breezeway after dark.
