Designer Clutter
Can clutter exist even for the minimalist or modern home
?
So, I have been out and about lately, shopping for some new furniture and accent pieces for my house, and it seems that modern is definitely in style and holding strong. Now, I must admit there is something sleek and sexy about the strong lines of the modern design. Even the fabrics are appealingly seductive.
Yet, when I try to visualize my entire home filled with practical objects and a free-flowing, open space plan, although I like the uncluttered idea, I don't feel all warm and cozy inside.
It's no secret that I am definitely a cottage woman who loves her "things." For me, whether my space is big or small, I gravitate toward overstuffed seating, am wild about flowers, and the thicker the planks of a hardwood floor, the better.
I guess I have a thing for old-fashioned comfort.
But I started to think about this in terms of clutter control and asked myself, does the type of style we prefer influence our level of clutter? Does the bare bones minimalist experience less clutter than the traditionalist, cottage woman?
This prompted me to conduct my own private survey. What I found to be interesting is that I honestly couldn't find a difference in the amount of one's clutter due to their particular decorating style.
What I did find fascinating, though, is that I did see similarities in people's personalities and careers that reflect their taste and how they express it with the way they decorate.
For example, a lot of my clients who work in the arts lean more towards the modern style verses people who hold corporate positions, who were attracted to traditional forms, and the entrepreneurial client was much more eclectic and cottage-like.
Regardless of the design, I did not see a difference in their levels or manifestation of clutter. Which makes absolute sense to me, because as I have always maintained, disorganization does not discriminate.
So, you can see how this is just another example of how this holds true.
Clutter is personal. Clutter is emotional. Clutter is about what is going on for you. As much as I would like to pinpoint it to one particular style, form or fashion, I cannot.
By nature, I believe all styles have something in common that can't be disputed and that is a sense of luxury. Regardless of what your preference may be, all afford this quality that is undeniable.
So does the minimalist/modern home experience less clutter than the traditional or cottage home? Not that I am aware of. So, take your pick, choose your fabric, layout your style, it's safe to say in my book, clutter doesn't have a thing to do with it!
