Designer Jeans v Leggings
Both denim jeans and leggings are currently two wardrobe staples for autumn/winter 2010
. This article looks at the history behind both fashion items and guides you through the advantages of each.
The History of Jeans
Denim jeans have been around for almost two hundred years. They started out as just simple pieces of denim which were tied over other pieces of clothing to protect them. It wasn't until the early 19th century when Leob Strauss, who later changed his name to Levi, produced denim trousers for the workers of California. These are what we now refer to as Jeans.
Originally denim jeans were worn by manual workers such as miners as a durable, hard wearing piece of clothing. They were later adopted by cowboys in the west for the same reasons. Gradually they spread across America being the clothing of choice for working men and later for their sons.
Denim jeans are now a stable wardrobe item the world over, but they are currently more a fashion item than work wear.
The History of Leggings
Leggings have a much longer history which dates back to the Renaissance period in the 14th century. Originally they were two separate pieces of material which were worn under clothing for warmth. They later formed a single item of clothing and jumped into the fashion arena in the 1960s known as Capri pants. They remained popular throughout the 1970s but really came into their own during the 1980s as an essential fitness item.
More recently leggings are worn as a more modern form of tights, under longer length jumpers and tunic style tops by both men and women.
The Advantages of Jeans
The main advantage of jeans is the one that has been known for years their durability. Jeans are much less likely to snag, rip or tear than leggings so will be a part of your wardrobe for much longer.
Another advantage of denim jeans is that they keep you warmer. As denim is a much thicker fabric than the Lycra and spandex which leggings are composed off, they keep the cold out better.
Jeans are also more flattering to all body shapes as they do not cling to the body like leggings do. Designer jeans come in a wide variety of fits including slouch, hipsters, boot cut and skinny fit so it's easy to find a pair that suit your body shape.
Due to the way denim is dyed, they fade gradually over time to create a distressed look which is still stylish. This means that washing is less likely to damage
jeans than it will Lycra and spandex leggings.
The Advantages of Leggings
The first advantage of leggings over denim jeans is that they are made of a much thinner material. This means that they will keep you cooler during warmer weather than designer jeans will.
Leggings are made from stretchy fabrics such as Lycra and spandex which means they create a tight fit around your body. Their stretching properties therefore compensate for mild weight fluctuations so you don't need to buy new leggings every time you gain or loose a little weight. Their stretchiness leads to another advantage too which is their sleek design. This creates a flattering silhouette on the right body shape.
Due to the fabric used to create leggings, as well as the manufacturing process, they are generally cheaper than designer jeans, even if the leggings are also from a designer brand.
