Initially, ruffles were found along the borders of table cloths, bed spreads, cushion covers, pillow covers, etc. When talking about clothing items, it featured along the hem of skirts and on blouses along the neckline and cuffs. British and French women strongly advocated the use of ruffles on their clothes during the 15th and 16th century. During those times, primarily strips of lace were sewn as ruffles along the hem, neckline and cuffs.

With the British rule in India, this trend of using ruffles as a form of trimming on Indian clothing caught on with the Indian women as well. Calcutta being the capital during the British rule, the trend of ruffles established itself strongly amongst women belonging to Eastern India than any other region of India. The use of ruffles was prevalent in Saree blouses back then. The Saree blouses had simple round neckline in order to facilitate the sewing of ruffles. The Saree blouses always featured elbow length sleeves with ruffles near the elbow. Women belonging to the royal families and rich Zamindar families were the first to adopt this style. Vintage paintings and photographs clearly depict the women of royal and Zamindar households in gorgeous silk Sarees or brocade Sarees paired with matching Saree blouses featuring lace ruffles along the neckline and cuffs.

Old-fashioned and more aptly out of fashion, women cant dream of wearing such Saree blouses publicly or even at home for that matter. But that doesnt mean that Saree blouses with ruffles are completely out of fashion. They have made a successful comeback, although with certain changes in style, and continue to make a mark of their own in the Indian fashion scenario. This vintage trimming has been given a contemporary touch, and, today, short or narrow ruffles in net, lace, gota, fancy fabric, velvet, tissue, etc adorn the neckline, armhole, sleeve borders and waistline of many a Designer Saree Blouse.
