Leaving for college can be tough on a kid. Not only have you left behind friends who have gone off to other schools themselves, you are greeting a new phase in your own life without your family nearby. Your new life will require some adjustments and in the midst of it all, you will be adjusting to a new living arrangement. Some get to pick their own roommate and others are assigned someone. In some cases, you may even get your own room, though it is rare for freshmen. If you are headed off to college, you should try to create a comfortable living space. At the end of the day following your classes, you want to come home to a room that, even if small, offers you the feeling of home. Dorm rooms can be uncomfortable and cold, but with a little planning and some creativity, you can turn yours into an area where you will want to spend time. Even if the room initially looks like all the rest on your floor, you can personalize the space so you have somewhere to go when you are feeling homesick. The same rules for making a space feel good in your home apply to a dorm room. Create a personalized, organized space that suits your personality. There are plenty of organization options for even the smallest, boxiest dorm rooms. You may not have the space or money for anything elaborate like mezzanines or pallet racking, but you can use more sophisticated means than just stacking milk crates.

Most of the time painting will not be option, but sometimes buildings do allow this. If you want color in your room, be sure to check with the school before doing so.

However, you can still bring color into a space without paint. You can hang tapestries on the wall, hang posters, or secure fabric to the wall temporarily with fabric adhesive.

Flooring is also another way to bring color into a room. There are numerous rugs from which to choose that allow you to brighten a space even better than paint would. The room may feel cozier if you separate it into areas for living, sleeping, and studying. Even if these spaces are small, separating them can help you stay organized.

Finally, it is important to personalize the space even further. Once you have chosen colors you love, you can add accessories to a space that will make it uniquely your own. Bring photos from home of your family and friends and hang them on walls or display them on shelves. You will feel most comfortable in a space that reminds you of the friends and family you have back home.
