Designing A Small Backyard
The idea of landscaping a small yard may seem overwhelming because of the seemingly few possibilities that the small area has to offer
. However, once your creativity kicks in you may still have fun designing this small yard regardless.
There are still many things you can do to transform a small yard, but the technique you will use to transform this small yard is different from the technique you would use to landscape a large yard. The first thing you will want to do is observe your back yard from at least one level about the ground level.
This bird's eye view will help you see the entire potential of your small back yard. Your yard is not limited to the ground level.
You have several different levels to work with. Becoming aware of the fact that you can use this variety of levels expands your ability to become creative with your backyard tremendously.
These levels can be added to your backyard using plants and terraces of various heights. Once you have discovered the idea of using layers, you will need to choose a focal point in your backyard.
This focal point will be critical to how your landscaping work turns out. At the center of the focal point, you should place whatever will be the main attraction of your yard.
For example, some people love fountains and install a pond while others love flowers and plant roses. If you have room, you could combine several different elements to create your focal point.
Even if you love trees, trees are not a very good choice as the object for the center of attention. This is especially the case in small backyards as they tend to take up a lot of space.
You might be able to get away with a tree that grows very slowly in your yard, but not as the focal point. Other people are very social and make the patio, table area, and wood deck the focal point.
This is where the table and chairs are set and where people will spend most of their time in your back yard. With a small backyard you will only be able to choose one point to be the center of attention.
Everything around it is secondary and should enhance the focal point. This will tie together the various elements of your yard together well.
As you landscape your yard, it will be very important that all of the elements are similar or allude to a specific theme or design. This will help create balance, which is critical to a pleasing landscape.
This means that if you plan to plant one flowerbed, you will probably need to plant another or have another element to balance it out on one side. The two flowerbeds should be similar in size and shape.
However, you do not want the design to be perfectly symmetrical. A perfectly symmetrical design will make your small backyard appear even smaller.
Instead of planting perfectly shaped gardens, consider planting irregularly shaped gardens. This will help you small yard appear larger as the emphasis is taken of the size of the yard.
This will also add some spice to your yard. For example, a rectangular garden next to the fence is not very creative or attractive.
A curved garden would draw more attention to the flowers and make your yard feel larger, even if it is not. It will also help you
Irregular shaped or curved gardens also soften the sharp edges and create a more relaxing atmosphere. When you are deciding which plants to plant in your yard, you should select plants that naturally do well in your area.
It will not look good to invest in exotic plants only to have them wilt and die in your climate. Try to go for a clean, bright look when selecting flowers.
The baskets of overflowing flowers can add a unique element to a space, but it also makes that space look much smaller. Instead, try to incorporate space between the plants in your gardens.
This space will multiply how large the space feels. In addition, you will want to add the taller plants by the edges of your yard.
This will help you create the levels that were previously mentioned. The varying heights can also increase the sense of depth in the yard and make it feel larger.
As you consider these elements, your small backyard will be transformed. You will also be able to implement a much greater amount of creativity while designing your yard.
