In order to make these measurements they use a soft measuring tape, and they start the measurement at the center of the neck at the back of the person they are measuring. They then stretch the tape to the elbow of the individual and hold the tape in place while they have the individual bend their arm so that they form what looks like a chicken wing and can touch their nose with their index finger. Then the seamstress will measure from the elbow to the wrist. This gives an accurate length so the person can bend their arms and move their arms and shoulders in the dresses for girls the seamstress is creating.

When creating clothing for girls you have to keep in mind what the person wearing the outfit will move like. Sometimes the patterns have to take into account the bending movements and the sitting and standing the person will do. With these things in mind the tailor can design the outfit to move with the child and be comfortable to wear.
