A good website design can be a great asset to your business

. The design of your site should reflect the nature of your business, and be easy to navigate and understand. A cluttered or confusing website can cause your customers to think your company might also be disorganized, so the design of your site should not be taken lightly.

The first step in creating your website should be selecting a domain name. Domains are purchased through online registrars such as Go Daddy, Dotster, or Register.com. An appropriate domain name would be your business name or easy to remember abbreviation pertaining to your company. Try to avoid long domain names when possible, as these may be easier for customers to misspell when trying to reach your site. Although it is possible to have a website without its own domain name, such addresses are harder for consumers to remember and may give your customers the impression that your business hasn't put much effort or thought into its online presence.

Once you've decided on your online name, you will need to choose a company or place to host it. A website host is where the files that makeup your website are stored. It is possible to host your own website if you own a server computer that is always connected to the Internet, otherwise you will want to pay another company to host your site. Be sure to choose a host that offers enough space to hold the files your website will need and is known for reliability. A website will do you no good if your host has frequent problems and customers aren't able to get to your website.

The final step would be to choose a website designer that understands your business needs and is willing to listen to your goals for your website. For instance, if you don't plan to sell items on your website, don't let a website designer try to talk you into putting a shopping cart program on your site. Providing the designer with your company logo, color scheme and basic company information should give the designer a good foundation on which to build your site. Information you want customers to see should be simple to find on the page and presented in easy to read fonts and colors. If you aren't happy with the way information is presented or feel the site is too busy or confusing, be sure to express exactly what you don't like to your designer so that they understand what changes to make. Be sure you are happy with the design before the page is uploaded to your host. You don't want potential customers to find the site before it meets your standards.

Once you are happy with your site and it is accessible online to visitors, be sure to include your new website address on your company advertising, business cards and letter head. This will drive traffic to your new site, and allow search engines to find you.
