Designing Your Ideal Breast Augmentation
Clinically known as augmentation mammaplasty, breast augmentation is designed to change the shape
, size, and volume of the breasts through the use of implants. Implants consist of either saline or silicone and can be designed to give the patient the size and shape she desires with minimal health risks. Women who seek a larger breast size, or who wish to restore the natural volume lost during dramatic weight loss or through having children, usually request augmentation procedures.
Before making the decision to have augmentation surgery, it's important to choose a trustworthy and respected surgeon, since it is largely his skill and aesthetic eye that will determine the results of the procedure. Patients that are considering the procedure should seek out a surgeon that's been practicing for at least 5 years and has a history of satisfied clients willing to give him a positive reference. In addition, the doctor should be trained in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast, body, face, and reconstruction, and have privileges in a hospital or other accredited medical institution. In the United States, plastic surgeons are accredited by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, so check to see that the doctor in question is a member of good standing.
When choosing a doctor, don't be afraid to ask for before and after photos to see examples of some of the surgeon's best work and to get a sense of his general aesthetic. Experience and credentials are not the only factors that must be considered; an eye for proportion and placement is also essential. A surgeon that gives each patient the same type of look or uses the same implants may not be the right choice, unless the client is requesting that specific aesthetic.
Before the breast augmentation is performed, the patient will have the opportunity to sit down with the doctor and discuss what she hopes to accomplish with the procedure, why she's electing to have the augmentation done, and what the ideal desired result is. Through the use of computer 3-D imagery and being able to see actual implants in person, the client is able to decide what size, shape, and material is the right choice for her. For most people, the goal of surgery is to have a fuller look that is still natural and supports an active lifestyle, and plastic surgeons do their best to accomplish that. It's important to be specific when choosing and communicating about the end results, since this is largely the blueprint that guides the doctor through the procedure.
