Designing Your Own Engagement Ring
The newest trend in engagement rings is designing a one-of-a-kind ring detailed to the lucky woman's taste and style
. You just pick your diamond, pick the setting, and the jeweler will put the two together for you, creating an exceptional ring that is uniquely yours. Read on to learn about designing your own engagement ring.
The Setting
The seat that your diamond sits in is the engagement ring setting itself. As you begin to select an engagement ring, the setting is the portion you want to consider first, because you want to make sure that it represents your girlfriend's style. Consider what she's like: is she active? Is she fashion forward? Is she stylish? Does she have classic tastes?
Remember, she will be wearing this ring for the rest of her life, every day. You, and she, want to make sure that the style of the ring fits her personal style and is reflective of your tastes. Determine if you want to pick a setting that has unique details, or, if you prefer a setting that is more basic.
To make sure you get the perfect ring setting, we recommend observing the "fifth C," which is communication! If you don't feel comfortable speaking with her personally about what she likes in a ring, consider speaking with her friends or her family. Perhaps she's been leaving hints about her likes or dislikes, or perhaps you can discreetly ask for her input regarding jewelry that you see in stores or on friends.
Of course, you are a significant part of this decision, but you want to make sure that the ring setting you're selecting is representative of her lifestyle.
The Diamond
Now that you've picked the setting, now it's time to pick the diamond "centerpiece" of the ring - the diamond! Some guys may have a diamond already from a family heirloom or perhaps one of their grandmothers' antique engagement rings. However, if you don't have a diamond already, it's important to remember the traditional "Four Cs" - Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight - when picking out a diamond.
- Carat Weight refers to how big the diamond is. And while size matters, it's important not to sacrifice the other three Cs in order to get the biggest diamond possible. Ideally you want to get the best quality and best size diamond for your budget.
- Cut describes the shape of the stone (emerald, princess cut, cushion cut, round, oval, rectangle, etc.) and how many facets are cut or how much brilliance is going to be reflected in the diamond
- Color signifies the lack of color in the stone (the less color the better), or whether or not it's grey or yellow or a rare color such as pink or blue
- Clarity determines how clear the stone is and whether or not it has any little inclusions (any spot, scratch, bubble, or line that occurred when the diamond was still being formed deep in the earth) or flaws that are visible with or without a microscope.
All these Cs taken into consideration together are the factors formulated you should look at when picking out a diamond for your designer engagement ring.
A good jeweler will help you select the perfect setting style, the best diamond for your money, payment options, delivery timeframe and whatever else you may have on your mind. Whatever you choose, your future wife is going to love her one-of-a-kind engagement ring!
