Designing a Fire Protection System
Fire protection involves a lot of things. It involves understanding the risks of fire, reducing these risks by using latest technologies and developing and maintaining these fire fighting systems. Mainly fire fighting systems are used to prevent firstly loss of life, and secondly to protect the property and to prevent the interruption of important public services. All these are taken into account when building a fire protection system.
The most important point that is analyzed before anything else is the kinds of materials kept in the premises; whether they are flammable gases, or combustible metals, or any kinds of oils or solids that can catch fire easily. Once these elements are classified the fire system can be designed around them either to prevent the fire or to extinguish one.
There are two main kinds of fire fighting systems that have to be developed:
1) Passive system: This system is designed with the safety of the premises in mind. For this purpose the particular area can be divided into a number of fire compartments. It could be just one room or more than a room. This division is done with the idea of preventing the spread of fire in the premises. Even if the spreading of the fire cannot be prevented, compartmentalization helps in slowing down the process. In this system only such materials are used that can limit the spread of the fire, or to keep the fire or other gases at high temperature within the walls of the premise where the fire originated first. This gives enough time to the fire fighters to evacuate people from the premise and to extinguish the fire.
2) Active system: The active system, contrary to the passive system, is made up of many fire fighting equipments that work only when there is a fire in a particular. In this system fire can be controlled manually using a fire extinguisher or automatically through fire sprinkler system, foam system, etc. These kinds are normally found in large areas There is fire detection system also that detects when there is a fire and sounds an alarm. This helps in evacuation and extinguishing the fire. But these systems require regular maintenance to keep them in working condition. But for a proper fire fighting system it is necessary that both; the passive and the active systems are used. Only a systems which has all the components in place will work to prevent or lessen the damage due to fire.
