The one room in which a person can really afford to indulge and create a relaxing, comfortable and stylish retreat is the bedroom.

Yet there is more to consider than what colour to have on the walls and whether to have freestanding or fitted bedroom furniture. Interior designers recommend that you give more thought to your bedroom than any other room.

Choosing the right paint colour is important as the colour will have a real effect on the room's proportions and mood. It is not just the colour, but also the shade that you need to give some careful consideration. Admittedly, nowadays anything goes when it comes to wall colours in the bedroom and soft blues and greens remain a firm favourite.

If you regularly find yourself in need of a good nights sleep, using pale shades is a good idea as they are calming and tranquil. However, if your bedroom is north facing, avoid using pastel colours as the lighter the shade the colder the room can appear. In these rooms, use pinks and lilacs instead, as they are a great way of injecting some warmth.

You may want your room to have a more dramatic effective in which case a colour with stronger, deeper tones like chocolate brown, purple or deep turquoise is best. However, you do not have to use the colour on all of the walls, if you think it may be a bit much use the colour on a feature wall.

The bedroom is a room where you can really play around with the lighting; the right light will help you wind down and get a good night's sleep. However, at times you also need strong lighting so you can do everyday things like get up and get dressed in the morning without having to hunt for socks and other smalls in an atmospheric but dim light.

Fitting a dimmer switch on the main light or wall light is a great way to create an instant atmosphere. Don't just have a switch by the door though where possible, make it controllable from the bed that way you don't have to get up to turn the light off.
