Desiring God

What is the "one thing" you desire above any thing in 2010? This may be a difficult question to answer, since you may have several things of high priority on your mind that you want to do or experience this year. In Psalm 73:25, the psalmist tells us what he desires the most in the world. He says, "Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides you." Simply stated, he wants God more than anything else in life. Heaven and earth without God are nothing but vast wastelands.

You see, the psalmist sought to live a clean and a righteous life, yet he faced trouble at every turn. On the other hand, he saw the wicked scoffing at God, boastful, violent, and oppressive, yet they were living a life of ease and prosperity. He laments saying, "Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? Did I keep myself innocent for no reason? I get nothing but trouble all day long; every morning brings me pain" (Ps. 73:13-14). He tried to solve this mystery and inner conflict by the force of reason, but he found it to be an impossible task, until he entered the sanctuary of God. In the presence of God he discovered God's goodness, His justice, and the ultimate destiny of the wicked. He emerged out this struggle with a longing for God: "I desire you [God] more than anything on earth" (Ps. 73:25).

Do you desire God more than anything on earth? Do you derive your delight and satisfaction from knowing God and experiencing His goodness? Or do you look for your fulfillment and satisfaction in more money, more power, more knowledge, more pleasure, more friends, or in more of any other thing that the world offers? Trying to find satisfaction and fulfillment in anything besides God is like hewing broken cisterns that hold no water (Jer. 2:13). Yet people forsake the fountain of living water and hew themselves broken cisterns.

After Apostle Paul encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus, he realized that knowing Christ infinitely surpasses anything that the world offers. He said, "I count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ" (Phil. 3:8). He counted everything rubbish in order to gain Christ and be found in Him. Malcolm Muggeridge, the British journalist, who had experienced his share of fame, popularity, and success, admitted after finding Christ (rather was found by Christ) in his later years: "I say to youand I beg you to believe memultiply these tiny triumphs by a million, add them all together, and they are nothingless than nothing, a positive impedimentmeasured against one draught of living water Christ offers to the spiritually thirsty, irrespective of who or what they are."

Friend, as the Westminster Shorter Catechism insightfully states, the chief end of man is to "glorify God and enjoy him forever." Seek your satisfaction in Christ alone. Pursue God by engaging in such spiritual disciplines as worship, prayer, study, and Christian service, just to name a few. Spend more time with the Lord and bask in His presence. When you consciously seek after God, you can be sure you will face distractions to keep you from desiring Him. The antidote is to "bring every thought [distraction] into captivity to the obedience of Christ" (2 Cor.10:5). Make Christ the supreme object of your desire, love, and enjoyment.
