Desktop Security Software to Prevent Facebook Virus

The Facebook virus, currently known as Koobface, made its appearance several months ago. But it has made a resurgence and continues to create problems for those who belong to social networking sites. With close to 400,000 million Facebook users, this is a serious threat. A good desktop security software will help prevent your computer from becoming infected.

This particular virus affects social networking sites. It works by spreading a replicating worm from one social network user to several other users. The virus sends a message, disguised as one from a friend, and tells you there is a "must see" video or picture. First, it tells you to download an attachment so you can view the video or picture. Once you download the attachment, you have directly linked to the virus and have infected your computer with malicious spyware.

After your computer has become infected, the Koobface virus downloads a file called tinyproxy.exe which identifies all of your friends, and sends them infected messages as well. This is one quick way to alienate even the best of friends. The virus interferes with navigation by denying you access to Google searches or MSN searches and linking you to lesser known search engines. It has also been known to corrupt files and crash your memory. The file could also contain a key logger that records your keystrokes to steal your passwords, and that includes your online banking passwords.

How to avoid infecting your computer is simple. Do not download any file unless you are 100% sure you can trust its source. If it is a suspicious looking email, delete it without clicking any links. Even if it does look legit, contact the person who sent the message to verify if they actually sent it. If you receive an email from Facebook to reset your password, they will not send you an attachment. They will send you a link. To be safe, type your the social networking site into your address bar and go directly to the site without linking from your email message. Once there, you can check your account to verify password problems. Some of the suspicious emails sent are poorly written with grammatical and spelling errors, and are therefore easily identifiable as suspicious. Delete them immediately without clicking any links.

Social networking site authorities have been working to update their security system and restore passwords of those accounts that were infected. But it appears that the creators of this virus are still at work refining their handiwork to continue infecting these types of social sites.

To get rid of the virus, immediately log off your computer. Turn your computer back on and run your antivirus scan. You may want to change all your passwords and/or open a new social networking account. Your desktop security software should include a proactive antivirus software.
