Despite Rain, Seattle Remains A Top Travel Destination

While Seattle is frequently afforded the dubious distinction of being America's wettest city, a quick look at the country's rainfall statistics clearly shows that this Northwest metropolis is the victim of a bad rap.

More than forty cities across America top Seattle's annual rainfall of thirty-eight inches, including New York City, where annual downpours dump an average of almost four feet of rain on the Big Apple's streets.

Why then is Seattle almost universally regarded as the Rain Capital of America? In contrast to other cities, where heavy cloudbursts are as much the rule as they are the exception, rain in Seattle frequently manifests as a gray and nagging drizzle.

As a result, it's easy to come to the conclusion that it's always raining in Seattle. While the city does have its share of drizzly days, there's still plenty to do for residents and tourists alike.

One of the top draws has to be Seattle's Museum of Flight, where visitors can wonder at more than 50 full-size aircraft and a special space exhibit that spans the history of rocketry and space exploration.

The space exhibit, which opened in the summer of 2007, chronicles everything from Robert Goddard's pioneering work in rocketry to manned flight and the moon landings, as well as the wanderings of the Spirit and Opportunity robots across the surface of Mars.

No matter when it's raining in Seattle, chances are excellent the Museum of Flight will offer you a dry harbor and welcome respite from the elements. With the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, the Museum's doors are open seven days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm!

The Museum of Flight is by no means the only entertaining way to spend a rainy afternoon in Seattle. Not far from the Space Needle is the Experience Music Project, a multi-million dollar interactive extravaganza that tells the story of popular music in America. Another popular destination, the Wing Luke Asian Museum, chronicles the important role played by Asian immigrants in building the Pacific Northwest.

No matter what you've heard about Seattle's gray and dreary skies, there's still plenty to do on a rainy day, making the Emerald City one of America's top travel destinations!About the Author:
